Type-7 has twice as much cargo as an Asp, so that point is incorrect. When I ran the Type-7 I had no problem at all running it without shields as I rarely lost the ship. Freighters are supposed to be unarmoured and vulnerable, their job is only to get to point A to point B with maximum profit. If you feel like your skills aren't enough then do go for shields, but for a majority of people you can afford to lose the ship two or three times during a day's worth of trading.
If anything the Wings will provide much greater security for inadequate pilots as they'll have two fighters escorting them.
Edit: Saying that an Asp has more firepower and can defend itself is a mute point, it's a multi-purpose ship after all. Type-7 is just a freighter.
Edit2: I'd also suggest not editing the Type-7 article as you have a clear bias and provide misinformation
