I dissagree, I have been mostly harmless until recently (less than an hour ago), and now I have 90 kills. I think I've done maybe 10 kills today, maximum 15, so I was below Novice at 75. and I believe that I became Novice as soon as I scored 500k cr, (have 539k now, which should give a good ground for Trailblazer at 1m cr, which is double 500k. So it could easily be 250-500-1M-2M etc.etc.)
Somewhere I believe I've read the actual scorelist for ranks, but I might be misstaken.. though I am pretty sure the ranks are score based purely. (credits earned with the rank, not actual numbers of "goals".) Take explorer for example, you earn ranks depending on how deeply you scan a system, not how many you just blaze through. A deeply scanned system gives more credits = faster rank progress.
With Combat, you can hunt down 5000 harmless sidewinder and avoid all other ships, and get elite (if that's the kill count.).
Or you can kill harder enemies and earn more credits, and rank faster. I know which of these two I'd bet on logically.
