Hey Sir,
I know you posted this a long time ago, so I hope you return to this page to see what i've written.
You're power reactor is a fusion reactor. When you run out of hydrogen to fuel that fusion reaction, it collapses and goes nova, just like a star, but on a much smaller scale.
So you blowing up, is the most immersive thing they could have done. Hope this helps anyone else who stumbles across this page wondering why you blow up like he did.
