All thanks to Riken and his incredible mod. This is the flatscreen version of it, but the VR mod is equally amazing.

Update: having tested this some more I wanted to add more of my experience here - performance does take a hit, but not enough to make me turn it off. I'm running a 3080 at 3600x1600 resolution (just a little below 4k equivalent) at high and ultra settings and notice a bit of dip when I'm inside a tonne of effects like corrosive and a wall of packhounds all exploding right in front of my face in combat. But generally hovering around the high 60s in most combat scenes. On foot is generally always bad for me and I couldn't tell if it was much worse or not on foot. Turning it off didn't seem to change much quantitatively, so I may be limited elsewhere.
DLSS (when reducing supersampling below 1.0 this is an option) did introduce a little ghosting on my 3080 using the K preset (most noticeable on character faces in the ops menu when they look about), so have a go and see what you make of it. It did drop gpu usage significantly.
