Virtual Reality

From Elite Dangerous Wiki

Virtual reality fully immerses the player in a stereoscopic 3D cockpit. Head movement is tracked in real-time and the interface panels open automatically in the HUD. It's supported for flying ships and driving vehicles. However, ED: Odyssey's On Foot gameplay switches to a virtual flat screen. The unofficial free mod EDVR adds full stereoscopic virtual reality for On Foot.[1]

Overview

ED has native support for virtual reality (VR) inside ships and vehicles. You can freely look around the cockpit, view ship panels, and navigate space. This includes cockpit-based activities, planetary driving (SRVs), and the galaxy map. However, when you disembark the On Foot gameplay has a virtual flat screen projected inside your headset. The HUD elements are incompatible with VR. There are a few settings to improve the graphics, performance and On Foot VR.

Background

In 2014, Elite Dangerous was groundbreaking as one of the first major games to offer full VR support with an exceptionally immersive experience in an all-encompassing galaxy. It was the go to space game for many VR headset demos before the devices were commercially available. From a technical standpoint, Elite Dangerous is still a high-end VR title that pushes powerful PCs to their limit. Elite Dangerous is designed from the ground up to support Virtual Reality and 4K display tech. It has Cutting-edge visual quality and performance enabled by Frontier's Cobra engine. It supports the latest displays at 4K resolution, and is built for the future with full 8K and 16K support. It's compatible with Oculus Rift, SteamVR, HTC Vive and other VR headsets.

In March 2015, David Braben said supporting the Oculus Rift was possible right from the start, because Elite Dangerous is self-published by Frontier. If they had a publisher they'd have to make a businesscase and it would've been postponed into the future.[2]

EDVR

Elite Dangerous EDVR

EDVR is an unofficial patch for ED: Odyssey that fixes and greatly improves the VR experience in ED.[3] EDVR version 0.21.1 (and newer) converts the default grey flat-screen cinema background into full stereoscopic virtual reality for all interactions.[1] It's designed to match the gameplay of the base version of Odyssey.[1]

Features

  • On Foot Enhancements:
    • Full stereoscopic virtual reality for all interactions.[1]
    • Automatic transition between cockpit VR in ships and On Foot VR (walking).[1]
    • You can switch to a black background with custom curve or the default grey-surround screen view (HMD Cinema Mode).[1]
    • Customize the virtual screen resolution above 1920x1080.
    • Allows distance adjustments of the virtual screen in cinema mode to the eyes for On Foot viewing.[1]
    • Aim independently from where you are looking. Go into the EDVR settings and disable "Look to aim". "Look around you" lets you look around without your weapon following your head movement.[1] The "head gun" usage is only while aiming down sights.[1]
  • Single Key-Bind: enables a quick toggle key to switch into On Foot VR embodied modes.[3]
  • Lighting & Bug Fixes: resolves independent eye-brightness discrepancies and eliminates glitchy frame stutters during orbital glide at planets.[3]
  • Supercruise Stability: fixes freeze-frame anomalies during supercruise transitions.[3]
  • Explorer Cam is available (please read the instructions).[3]
  • Temporal anti-aliasing, using NVIDIA DLAA and DLSS on RTX cards.[4]
    • Fixes shimmering and jagged edges with minimal performance loss.
  • Motion controllers are currently not supported.[1]

The unofficial release build since version 0.19.1 (old) by Riken removes most shimmers and jaggies with DLSS 4.5/FSR 3.1 on non VR screens.[5][6] You can download the installer (get the newest version).

Virtual screen in VR

SteamVR

You can display a virtual screen inside SteamVR by using the built-in SteamVR Desktop function to pin your desktop inside your virtual environment. You can display anything such as a movie or YouTube video.

  1. Open the SteamVR menu while wearing your headset.
  2. Go to the Desktops section to view all of your connected computer monitors.
  3. Select the monitor or screen you want to use.
  4. Click 'Float in World' to move the screen and place it into your virtual reality space.
  5. Drag or resize the window using your controllers to position it where you prefer
