I – Explain the proposal.
  • Check the article history and previous talk-page discussions. Consider improving, merging or redirecting instead of deletion under Project:Deletion policy.
  • Open a section on the article's talk page. Identify the article, explain the reason, and link supporting evidence. For related pages, list each title and explain why they belong in the same discussion.
II – Add the notice and notify editors.
  • Add {{Afd|discussion=Talk:Article title#Section title}} to the article. Replace the example with the actual local discussion link.
  • Give a clear edit summary. Notify the creator and affected maintainers on their user talk pages, linking the same discussion. Keep notifications neutral.
III – Discuss and record the outcome.
  • Discuss the evidence and alternatives under Project:Consensus. An active notice is not a decision or a timed deletion instruction.
  • Record the result and reasons on the same talk page. Ask an uninvolved administrator to review disputed or destructive outcomes. Remove the active notice after closure and preserve the discussion record.
  • See Project:Deletion review for a disputed deletion. No external gadget, bot or daily log is required.

Usage

{{AfD in 3 steps}}

The discussion parameter names the actual local discussion, including a section where useful. Dates and outcomes record a discussion; they do not import another site's deadlines or voting rules. Keep relevant contributor credits and historical records.
