Adding a Few thing to DNYI's already very good list (I have 320hours of playtime):
When looking on your speed indicator, there is a blue area, stay in this area for a better turning rate.
In combination, learn how to use Flight Assist, turning FA off enables you to make even tighter turns while in this blue area, but beware, turning flight assist off, makes it harder maintaining control of your ship.
Target subsystems! If your opponent turns out to be an ASP or bigger, switch to your left panel and go for 'SUBSYSTEMS', always target its Power Plant. If you hit the enemy ship in the right Angle (bottom side of the ship mostly) you're very likely to destroy the PP before the ship's hull is at 0%.
Use shield cell banks. just do it, SCBs are live savers. Consider Chaff launchers aswell, very usefull if you are a small target.
Never let your budget go below the insurance cost of your ship.
Try using a Kill-Warrant scanner. it takes a little while to scan, but sometimes doubles the income of your bounty vouchers. it's a very good way to earn a lot of money in a short period of time. (about 9 million in 1 1/2 hours for me). you can check the target's bounty (before and after the scan) on the left panel under 'CONTACTS'.
If you are engaged in a fight and you are not sure if you can win it, back the fuck out. srsly it's not worth the risk.
Plan your outfitting in advance to prevent pointless investment and power management issues. This site is great for trying all sorts of things: http://coriolis.io/
When going into Resource Extraction Sites (preferably HIGH RES) and you find nothing but Sidewinders and Eagles, log in and out again to reset the RES spawn and repeat until the big prey spawns. (clippers, dropships, pythons etc.)
IMO the most important thing to invest at the start is the Powerplant, then Power Distributor, Shield generator and Thrusters. agian, try the Coriolis site to understand why.
Life support lives up to its name. Trust me, theres nothing more stressfull to get your canopy blown out after your shield are down and the Oxygen countown pops up, so upgrade! but then again, if you're losing your shields, you're doing it wrong (Keywords SCBs).
I think that's all that comes to mind right now... hope it helps.
Safe Travels commander.
