As a reply to this discussion I'd like to express my opinion as veteran Elite player.

Big ships are the ultimate mining ships, while small ships are very limited. As of right now, thanks to the collector limpets, big ships don't need to scoop anything manually, and no asteroids are nowhere near close together to pose any kind of obstacles ever.
