— Author Name, source in "Quotes" or Italics as needed

A quote box is an alternative to an inline quote or a block quote. Quote boxes are displayed in a stand-alone manner (similar to images) and are best suited to noteworthy or important quotes. Quote boxes should be used with care, because they lack the context supplied by the flow of the body text, and might present point of view issues or undue weight issues. The Manual of Style guidelines for block quotations recommend formatting block quotations using the Blockquote template.

  • The text presented in quote boxes should not be enclosed in quotation marks.
  • Quotes work best when used with short sentences, and at the start or end of a section, as a hint of or to help emphasize the section's content.
  • For typical quotes, especially those longer than the rest of the paragraph in which they are quoted, Cquote provides a borderless quote with decorative quotation marks, and Quote frame provides a bordered quote. Both span the article width. (However, do not use Cquote for block quotations in articles.)
  • For very short quotes, Rquote (with decorative quotation marks) can be used to set the quote off to either the right or left as in a magazine sidebar. This can be effective on essay pages and WikiProject homepages, but should not be used in articles.

Usage

For actual quotes, and poems, this template (a variant of Quote frame) can be used to present a title, quote, author, and source in a box such as that shown opposite, with options to customise its bordering, background, alignment and other aspects.

Caution: The Quote box template is a floating div, which means that, just as it happens with images, its position will vary depending on the rendering layout, and the article's text above and below may or may not flow around the box. This is a liability to the quote–context relation and, as such, Quote box can only be used as long as it does not produce out-of-context, undue emphasis or any form of editorializing effect (see MOS:PULLQUOTE).

Note: This is a div-based template, so it may malfunction if indented using wikitext syntax. This is a current limitation of the Wikipedia HTML parsing software.

When used with a poem, it is convenient to wrap the poem's content in <poem>...</poem> tags; these preserve line breaks without having to manually insert <br /> markup.

Parameters

Basic parameters

  • |title=: Optional title to appear at the top of the quote box.
  • |quote=: The quote or other text to be displayed in the box.
  • |author=: Optional name of the author. A reference citation can be added at the end. A dash is automatically rendered in front of the author, or in front of the source if there is no author.
  • |source=: Optional source of the quote ("Quoted" or Italic work title, and other publication data). A reference citation can be added at the end.

Main box styling

  • |align=: Alignment of the quote box on the page—left / right / center / none. Defaults to right alignment. Using align=none will remove word wrapping.
  • |width=: The width of the quote box. Defaults to the width of the quote included, unless |align=center or |align=none where the width will default to 100%.
  • |border=: The width of the quote box border. Defaults to 1px. Remember to include 'px' or 'em' to specify the correct width.
  • |fontsize=: The fontsize of the quote box text; specify a percentage, e.g. |fontsize=90%. Use font sizes of 85% or higher, per MOS:SMALLFONT.
  • |bgcolor=: The RGB background color of the box. Defaults to #F9F9F9 (light gray).
  • |style=: A generic CSS style parameter. Entries in this parameter supersede any duplicates in the preceding parameters.

Title styling

  • |title_bg=: The RGB background color of the title. Defaults to #F9F9F9 (light gray).
  • |title_fnt=: The title font color. Defaults to black.
  • |tstyle=: A generic CSS style parameter. Entries in this parameter supersede any duplicates in the preceding title parameters.

Quote styling

  • |qalign=: Alignment of the quote element—left / right / center. Defaults to left.
  • |qstyle=: A generic CSS style parameter. Entries in this parameter supersede any duplicates in the preceding quote parameters.
  • |quoted=: If this parameter evaluates to true (is not 0, false, or empty) the quote box will enclose the quote in fat-quotes. Use judiciously; quote marks do not display in mainspace (articles) per MOS:BLOCKQUOTE.

Source styling These affect the entire |author= and |source= block, below the quotation.

  • |salign=: Alignment of the source element—left / right / center. Defaults to the value of qalign.
  • |sstyle=: A generic CSS style parameter. Entries in this parameter supersede any duplicates in the preceding source parameters.

Examples

Various example codes and their results. For more intricate examples see Template:Quote box/examples. In the examples the lorem ipsum template merely generates several lines of sample text without meaning, and is not part of the quote syntax.

Floating and wrapping

Minimal code, defaults to floating right and minimal width:

|source = Julius Caesar, Act III, Scene I.
}}
Lorem ipsum

Custom classes

This parameter should only be used by editors who fully understand how this template works. The "class=" parameter can be used to add a generic CSS class to this template. Some classes are not compatible with other options or require specific options be set to be useful or look good.

Letterhead custom class

The "letterhead" class should be used with |title_bg=none, |border=none, and |bgcolor= either not used or set to "none". Since the upper-left-corner will have a white background, it should only be used on pages with a white background.

Care should be taken that neither the title nor the text extends into the "left corner" portion of the box. To use a blank line for a title, use |title=&nbsp;. To provide a blank line at the bottom of the letterhead, add <br /><br /> to the end of the |source= parameter (or |author=, if |source= was not used).

Collapsing text

Sections of text can be collapsed by use of hidden begin and hidden end.

— Mary Howitt, 1829

Note that, although |halign=center, the centering is reset after the hidden begin, since that template applies its own styling. This can be resolved by using |contentstyle= in hidden begin with appropriate markup; in this case:

Usage

This template can be used to make a standard navigation box. It is intended for use within another template that standardises the title and contents of the box (see Template:ShipNavbox). This template SHOULD NOT be used directly within articles, as it creates a maintenance burden to do so whenever the contents of the box have to be updated.

The purpose of this template is to standardise the attributes of all navigation boxes, for example, their colours and other CSS attributes. The template is fairly simple, and could be extended to add other features in the future. Using this template allows changes to be implemented much quicker and easier than editing each template separately.

Syntax

  • Groups: Currently there is no technical limit to the maximum number of groups.
    • Groups of items can be added as parameters: group1, group2, group3, ... up to groupN.
  • Group title: Each group has its own title parameter: gtitle1, gtitle2, gtitle3, ... up to gtitleN. Note that the default width for the first column is 15%.
  • Group style: Style may also be customised to each group in: style1, style2, style3, ... up to styleN.
    • Note that neither the title nor the items have any wiki-links built into the template. As a result, users of the template are free to use wiki-links as they wish.
  • Line breaks: Line-breaks (<br />) are unnecessary, as text wrapping is done automatically by the template. This also includes links and text in gtitleN and groupN.
  • Bullets: Create unordered lists with lines beginning with *.
  • Pipe links: Because of the nature of template syntax, it may be necessary to use Template:! ().

States

  • Autocollapse: By default, the state of a navbox is "autocollapsed". This means that if the number of navboxes in a page exceeds the maximum allocation of the collapsible navboxes, then the remaining navboxes are collapsed automatically. For more information (or to change the setting), see MediaWiki:Common.js.
    • Currently, the autocollapse allocation is 2 (see MediaWiki:Common.js). This means that if there are 3 navboxes in a page, the third and subsequent navboxes will be collapsed automatically.
  • Uncollapsed: Forces the navbox to be displayed.
    • All of the navboxes in this documentation are in the uncollapsed state.
  • Collapsed: The reverse of uncollapsed. Forces the navbox to be hidden instead.
    • Navboxes with a height of more than 300 pixels will also be collapsed automatically. For more information (or to change the setting), see MediaWiki:Common.js.
  • Plain: Removes the "show/hide" link.

Sub-groups

  • For larger navboxes, it may be necessary to include sub-groups within a particular group of items. It is also possible to collapsible navboxes within the parent navbox, see Collapsible sub-groups.
  • To create sub-groups within navbox, certain parameters are to be included:
    • The parent navbox group (i.e. group2 in the example below) requires the type parameter (gtype2 = Subgroup).
    • The nested navbox (sub-group) requires the inclusion of the sub-group parameter (subgroup = yes). This enables the template to differentiate between the sub-group and the parent navbox.

Collapsible sub-groups

  • For extremely long navboxes, it is recommended to use collapsible navboxes within the parent navbox. Further sub-groups can then be added to these collapsible navboxes.
  • To create collapsible sub-groups within navbox, these parameters need to be included:
    • The parent navbox is almost always uncollapsed (state=uncollapsed).
    • The parent navbox group (i.e. group1 in the example below) requires the type parameter (gtype1 = Subgroup).
    • The nested collapsible navbox requires the inclusion of the collapsible parameter (collapsible = yes). This enables the template to differentiate between the collapsible navbox and the parent navbox.
    • The nested collapsible navbox is forcefully collapsed (state=collapsed).

Use of images

  • The use of images in navboxes is permitted, but please resize the images to keep them small. Inventory-sized images (25-30 pixels) are recommended.
  • Please use plink to create links with images. Use plink for any case where text is not desired after the link. It functions the same as plink, but it does not produce a wikilink in text. Use chatl to link chatheads. These templates create links for both the image and text (except for plink) using far less wikicode than the standard syntax.

Link and file share the same name

Item

File name differs from the link

Item

Link and file share the same name, but different text is desired to display

File name differs from the link and different text is desired to display

Categorising

Navboxes are very useful for transcluding categories onto a large number of pages that share both a trait and the navigation box. For example: Template:ShipNavbox transcludes Category:Ships onto every page that uses it.

There are 2 methods of categorising pages with navboxes:

The first way is with Ctg. This is the preferred method, and can be used in most cases. The rules and operations for the Category handler template are very simple; however, they are enough to produce the desired results on most pages.

Categorisation should only be used on a template for large-scale addition. It is unhelpful, for example, to use a rule that only applies to 1 page.

Examples

To see the following navboxes in action, see Template:Navbox.

Single line navbox with centered list

{{navbox
|name =
|title =
|style1 = text-align:center
|group1 =

Multiple line navbox

Collapsed navbox

{{navbox
|state = collapsed
|name =
|title =

Preventing unwanted documentation

The Navbox template's documentation is automatically transcluded under the navbox on any Template namespace page. It is not transcluded when used as a sub-group or collapsible sub-group template (subgroup= yes or collapsible=yes).

Should the documentation appear when it is unwanted, it can be hidden by setting the doc parameter doc=no on the template. In most cases, the doc parameter is NOT used and the parameter is removed completely.
