Currently the audio signal has no bearing on distance/proximity except possibly for how loud the audio is. Instead the audio signal sound directly relates to the type of signal. See www.wavescanner.net as it can show the visual graph and play the audio for several of the signal types in the game. The visual representation gives signal type, bearing and distance. Bearing will be discussed below. Distance is given both by how wide the signal representation is and by how brightly lit it is. While a very far away signal may not be seem to be that wide initially, one can tell it is far away because it is not very brightly lit and instead of being a solid line, it appears as several small intermitent lines. As one gets closer to a distant source the signal will resolve into a wide continuous signal that is more birghtly lit. This wide signal will become more narrow as you get closer to it but it will remain brightly lit.
The way the visual and audio relates to bearing is that the wave scanner updates with a sweep across the display like actual radar sweeps across most radar screens. The sweep always moves from left to right. The bearing of the signal source is indicated by where the visual signal appears and plays audio during the sweep. For example if the signal appears on the left side and the audio plays when the sweep arm is on the left then the signal source is to your left. If the signal appears on the right side and the audio plays when the sweep arm is on the right then the signal source is to your right. if the signal appears in the center of the display and the audio plays when the sweep arm is at the center of the display then the signal source is to your someone in front of you. To align your SRV with a signal source, turn your SRV until the signal you want to investigate is showing up in the center of the display and the audio is playing when the sweep arm is in the center of the display. After alignment move forward and as you are moving forward re-align the signal to the center of the display as necessary. Eventually the width of the signal will decrease as you get closer to it but it will still remain birghtly lit.
