It really depends on what your priorities are. As far as the largest ships go yes the federal corvette is a better combat ship than the cutter but for trading the cutter is by far the best trader just because of sheer cargo capacity. For their respective middle sized ships (clipper and dropship) they are both multi-purpose but the clipper can haul more cargo, despite what the maneuverablity numbers say is more maneuverable, has better shields, better jump range, and is a better combat ship.
I do agree with you though the python cockpit is terrible :) !
