The logic of this weapon makes no sense from the perspective of technological consistency. If the logic is that they can get through the shield because they're small, then all our ships should be swiss cheese by now thanks to micrometeors. If the logic is that they're made of some special material that shields don't stop, then why not make bullets of of them? Like so many things E:D, it's a game-mechanic implented solely for the sake of game mechanics by people who clearly have only a vague understanding of how people actually play the game in the first place.
