Usually people in Elite: Dangerous use something called Micro Credits. There are 100 Micro credits in a credit and, considering each credit is worth something along the lines of 50$ in current currency, I assume people get paid something along the lines of 10-20 credits per month average for wages.
So if you consider most expenses, it's indeed something expensive unless you have massive amounts of money lying around that you can use for those cells.
Basically, players are rich, we start the game on a borrowed sidewinder that costs 32.000 Credits, that x 50 is worth about 1.600.000$ on current money
