The Prismatic Shield Generator allows a player to fit a shield generator that is effectively an A-rated module of the class size above the slot that it is being fitted into. Thus a Class 3 Prismatic Shield Generator can be fitted into a Class 3 module compartment but gives a shield strength of approximately that of a 4A shield. However, it also weighs the same as the Class 4 shield generator and draws more power than a normal 4A shield generator. The benefits are that a small ship with small internal compartments can fit a stronger shield generator than would otherwise be possible, or a (trading) ship can fit its shield into one of its smaller internal compartments, freeing up a larger compartment for an increased cargo load. For combat ships where weight and power consumption are usually at a premium, the benefits appear to be limited.
