Engineers did make the meta go crazy. Multi cannons have always been the easier to use of the kinetic weapons, due to high muzzle velocity. Shield tank and laser was always better if you didn't want to or couldn't (such as exploring) go home to repair. A mixed loadout has always been more effective. Remember like to like. Shield is energy, so use lasers. Hull / Armor is physical, so use kinetic.
