From Elite Dangerous Wiki

Okay, actual astrophysicist here (well, studying for my PhD, but I'm far enough along that I like to think I know a thing or two), and I'll address the first two comments:

1.)  If you're referring to Mars' atmosphere now, yes, it has too little oxygen and is too dry, but they terraformed the planet.  If you're referring to Mars' atmosphere in-game, that is plenty enough to support human life.  And as for Mars having too weak of a surface gravity to maintain an atmosphere that thick... you're right, the atmosphere would slowly leak into space, returning to its real life state.  The key word is slowly, as in, millions of years.  The loss on timescales this short is so minscule it can be neglected.  And besides, if we have the technology to give it an atmosphere that thick, we have the technology to maintain that atmosphere.

2.)  Mars' real life rotational period is actually pretty close to an Earth day.  To be precise, one Mars day is 1.026 Earth days, or about 37 minutes longer than an Earth day.  So to one decimal place, one Mars day is 1.0 Earth days in real life!
