There are the same number of Fed ships as Imp ships. Currently there is the Fed Dropship and the Diamondback Scout. The Empire has the Courier and Clipper. Soon they will be getting the Fed Assault Ship and Imp Eagle, respectively.
As for what purpose the Imp Eagle serves? Honestly, it is mostly a thing people just wanted. The Imp Eagle is fondly remembered by many as the best of the Eagle variants, and a great ship to fly until the late game. I expect it will be not much more expensive than an Eagle, which is a huge difference compared to the Courier. It seems to be notably weaker than the Courier, with lower classes of weapons, and I speculate it will probably be slower and have weaker shields. If you can get a courier, there is probably no question which one is supoerier, but for those who aren't there yet, or looking for a nostalgia trip, I think this ship will have a nice spot.
