As you can see in this doc talking about the shield strenght ( https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1LhGGt9y0ga5HiV1tZL6k-hx4U_fIWY0IHES69Lc317U/pubhtml?gid=2011892275&single=true ), the clipper has very weak shields for its large size. Vulture's shields are far more powerful (for a ship costing 5 times less credits), and Python or Fer-de-Lance are faaaar better (twice more effective for a python, though it's more costly). The thing is, the clipper is not a small ship, and you can get easily, so those weak shields can't stand long enough, even with a board of booster. Maybe trying to boost your internals with reinforcement package, allowing you to play with a duo weak shields/powerful hull, but still vulnerable to sub-targetting. I played a lot with clipper in combat before wings update, and i still like this ship, but i don't recommend it for combat. It is more dedicated as trading/exploring ship for me (larger cargo than T7, more resistant and great jump range).
