I use Haulers like rental cars if I want to go pick up a ship but don't want to leave my current one at the destination. Buy it, fly it to my destination, and sell it. Don't even have to return it with the fuel tank full. ;)
A Sidewinder would be even cheaper, but it takes forever to get anywhere in a Sidewinder. Strip a Hauler down and add a 2A FSD and you can do 25+ ly per jump. Covers ground pretty fast. Even with the FSD upgrade you're looking at less than 30K cr in depreciation when you sell it back.
