Well the problem with fusion is that if you run out of hydrogen that it starts to combine helium -the product of [h]-fusion, and if [he] is out heavier elements until [fe] (iron). With every step it needs more space and emits energy more uncontrollable. Also the reason why stars get bigger bevor dying/collapsing ;)
