As great as some might find this ship to be (I've always had a soft spot for it), I feel it's overshadowed in its key role, combat (and by virtue basically every other area), by its peers and notably the Krait MkII. This is despite the Krait being classed 'multirole', albeit slightly combat-oriented multirole. I get that it's ~10mCr more expensive than the Federal Gunship (FGS) for the base hull, but it has no rank lock (much like the Crusader).. yet can jump further, has higher base shields, is a LOT faster (can keep up with any SLF), has better manoeuvrability, better jump range (and fuel tank), larger Power Plant (this will cost more in outfitting), larger sensors array (will cost more again), statistically higher DPS against larger ships (and higher hull ratings), unrestricted internal slots with and arguably better size distribution (thinking Fuel Scoop amongst others), an extra multicrew seat (and thus can get more bonus pips and deploy more player-controlled SLF's), has a higher Mass Lock Factor (17 compared to 14) despite the hull being 280T lighter (Anaconda syndrome?), can carry more cargo and/or passngers and (although I can't confirm it personally) apparently boasts less chance to be scanned by system security.
All this has to be factored in when deciding on a ship to use (for the FGS, most probably combat). When it comes to late-stage gameplay and Thargoids, given the FGS can't even out-run a Cyclops when fully engineered, it's only really useful in Anti-Xeno combat for Scout-swatting when compared to the competition (still better options there for competitive prices).
This said, while by no means is it unvaible for combat.. I'd like a buff to the FGS in some department, but unsure what would be sanctioned in order to retain the unique flight model and characteristics of this fantastic (in my opinion) but often understandably overlooked ship. Give it some love, FDev, and rescue it from being just a checkpoint on the way to unlocking the Federal Corvette.
Note: Sorry for homing in on the Krait and sorry if I missed anything out, it was just there as an example of the FGS' peers exceeding it at what it's made to do, despite not having the same limitations/restrictions.. even when not sharing the same focus role.
