From Elite Dangerous Wiki

Can't say I have never flown the FDL.

On paper they look quite simiar in regards to maneuverability. Guess if you can make the Huger hardpoint work for you then the FDL is much better. I personally prefer lasers so it would be wasted.

Having 1 Internal less then the FAS limits its uses if you are not going pure fighter. On a FAS you can fit nearly everything you want and a vehicle hanger (which makes sense as it just looks like a military combat transport).  Also the FAS has a bigger fueltank which gives it a few more options if running without a Fuelscope.

Personally I think the FAS can be used more as an allround ship and not only a pure fighter, if you like to do some light trades or smuggling keep a small to big cargorack and you are done. That was the reason I switched from my Viper MKIII to the MKIV the additional internal (the bigger fuletank and frameshiftdrive was an added bonus).

Thats the beauty about Elite there is not one ship that can do all good, you always have some compromises.

Jsut as an added thought I find AI FDL easier to tackle then AI FAS, but that might just be a personal issue, seems I can stay better on the tail of a FDL also AI FAS (and the other Federal ships) like to do more boom and zoom attacks, when the boost away turn around and then boost back weapons blazing and not caring what they hit, and 500tons ramming you is no fun. :)
