Well beyond comparision if you ask me. The Federal Dropship handles more like the heavy freighters (Type 6 for example) and drifts alot. The Assault ship can sometimes drift aswell, but the maneuverbility is much more compareable to a Fighter.
Its been along time since i piloted a viper so i dont remember how well it would turn, however i have no problems at all to keep enemies in sight. (using Flight-assist-off for faster turns, but usually not giving the thrusters more than 1 pip). If they run straight past you, you can easily get them in sight again before they completed their turn.
(my experience sofar with this ship, currently on D6 thrusters)
