From Elite Dangerous Wiki

"I especially love how you completely miss that Aisling and Felicia's goals are essentially the same:  Lifting up the most downtrodden members of society and ending oppression by the wealthy elite.

You talk about how the Federation is "corrupt and corporate" but then mention you want to join the Empire, in which almost nothing is illegal and Senators are literally above the law and can kill people at will with no consequences unless the Emperor personally objects to it.    "Needs a check a balance system" doesn't even begin to cover it.    They're an archaic society in space. "

Do not forgot Arissa Lavigny-Duval, the new 'Emperor' and her 'Shield of Justice', which only aim is to purge all form of corruption inside and outside her demesne.

I disagree when you compare Senator, law and  says 'nothing is illegal'. For a faction based on Ancient Rome, if they follow History (as i suppose the dev' do), prestige and honor really matters. Meaning that, if very few are illegal, decadence and no self control are severly blamed by society. The power of the senators, meanwhile must be use with great caution, even if they are above the law. Even if they do not have to tell the Emperor what they doing, they have to control a targeted area and keep it away from trouble (as Roman Emperors did, governors have to be held for their actions at the end of their mandate, and if their region felt in turnmoil, the family of the governor could be exile, kill, or worse.).

The Empire, i think, are a faction which really looks like the Roman Empire in its early days ('Principat' period). Few things are banished but many thinks matter : Self restrain, control, prestige, respect of the others, etc.

For this point, i don't see the Empire as an archaic society in space. They choose to put honor and respect of the values at the heart of their ideology. And this includes a controlled slavery. At the opposite, Federation choose to put diversity, growth and corporations at the heart of the system.

I don't really think there are one better than the other. I think that both factions have their own ideology, with strengh and weaknesses. And, as all ideologies, they have their part of society matters, risk, and opposition.
