As I understand there are no plans for extra gamemodes beyond some missions having similarities to such modes. Also galactic warfare whereever you want will land you at the bad end of the laws laser covered arm.
beta gives access to gamma? you betya. (see what I did there).
Walking around ships? Yes... in the expansions. Frountier wants to perfect the space game before the in ship and station game, then perfect that before the planatary landings, which is the second planned big expansion.
Yes Elite is all about the character of your ship. Your own charcter is little more than a bank balance and a set of reputations... the ship on the otherhand. (Honestly, the game is in part about having a love affair with a ship.)
Space scams. Yes. I have already done some. Most players tend to be too wary for it though.
Size of galaxy. Yeah... it's a LOT of stars. You can already check them ALL out on the galaxy map. So yeah... it's pretty crazy. The size of habited space is MUCH smaller.
