if you buy horizons, it essentially gives you both horizons + the original,
the horizons version is essentially adding planetary missions (at this point) + all the new features they implement in 2016, such as two-player controls, "shuttles", and the whole crafting mechanic, so you're essentially paying $45 for the next year of updates and $15 for the base game, this $60 price tag is set to drop back down to $15 over 2016 (maybe you'll even be able to update from the base game to horizons for free at that point), at which point they'll release another new $60 version that includes the 2017 updates
