Looks like orientation is quite important when landing I think you need to be facing the ramps with a yellow triangle on them (there used to help guide you out when you lanuch).

I spent at least 10-15 minutes the first time but if you have your input configured with all 6 trusters easly accessed it does get much easier to manage the landings.
