+1 on the miner. Adding the ability to mine provides for a deeper style of gameplay. Inidividuals can build ships to risk solo mining, while group can get together with some setup to defend and others focused on mining. There would definitely be a broader player appeal if there was a mining mechanic. (Trading does not replace this...)
