Although the cannon can technically reach out to that, it takes so long to get there that whatever you're firing at will have moved, unless it is totally still.

They're really short range weapons, and the bigger they are, the slower the projecile and the closer you have to be. The long range just makes it more likely you'll hit a space station or something...
