From Elite Dangerous Wiki

Also remember that the rock David flung at Goliath only killed him because God gave it that power boost.

Through personal testing (on my Clipper{RIP})- (1) Gimballed class 3 beam does MUCH faster damage to the power plant of an Anaconda (and the shields of anything else) than (2) class 2 Gimballed Beams. Both of those can be held constantly without the capacitor draining at all in 4 pips.

I've seen it explained like this:

Class 1 weapons...

      • do 99.9% damage to small ships like sideys
    • do 66.6% damage to medium ships like an Asp
  • do 33.3% damage to large ships like an Anaconda

^ these stats are not accurate but follow that general criteria. Much like fitting a shield generator that is too small for your hull mass affects how much shield coverage you have. Yes it will work but for how long and how good?

So to answer, yes it's worth every bit of that $20 Million if you're into bigger prey. If you enjoy hunting small ships for some reason then get an Asp and mount 6 class 1 weapons.

As for me in my loaded python (which also has 30 Mw Power) I typically use:

1 Class 3 turreted Beam/Pulse/Burst 2 Class 3 Gimballed Pulse 2 Class 2 Gimballed MC

AND have never heard "taking heat damage"

The secret to class 3 Beams of any sort is *usually* to only use 1. Then you can hold it until your finger falls off. Or the turret can whilst allowing you to operate other weapons. I like the Anaconda + sidey + sidey wings cause while I hammer the big guy with pulses and MC the turret smokes both sideys. Hope this makes some sense as it could rival Edgar Allen Poe for longevity.
