That's where it should be, as a holdover from modern vehicles.
In regards to modern vehicles: Most people are right handed, so it's beneficial having the gearstick in a position where it can be operated by the weaker hand while leaving the dominant hand on the wheel, in the same way somebody would hold a tool or weapon in their dominant hand.
Think about it, a carpenter would 8 use a hammer in his left hand and hold the nail in the right. unless he's one of those leftie weirdos.
