Any updates on this? The "under dispute" banner on the Ships page is a dead link and clicking on it tries to create a new page. I'd fix that except the page is locked. After catching up on the discussion here and the page's edit history, I now know why.
Many of the main legacy pages such as Ships do need cleaning up. I went through all the changes attempted and described above for the Ships page and generally believe they are helpful. A few items I'd suggest...
For Outfitting section, put in an intro paragraph with a "see main article" jump to the Outfitting page. As for the Outfitting table, I can see an argument that it best belongs on the Outfitting page. That said it has a useful purpose on the Ships page, similar to what I'll describe next for the Ship tables...
Ship tables... I have done a lot of edits on these over the past year. It's mind-numbingly tedious work, partly due to the wiki interface. I hate working on those tables. Wanted to nuke them for their redundancy so many times. That said, and the main reason I started editing those tables in the first place, they are the only place where the key stats of all ships can be compared side-by-side in one spot (if your screen is large enough). And that is the main thing I've used those tables for many, many times.
I would still like to remove some of the info from the tables that I believe is of limited value and/or are a configuration control nightmare to update at each new game release. But I believe the ship tables need to be retained in some form as they serve an incredibly useful purpose.
The config control nightmare I refer to goes like this: read latest release notes from devs, try to find all the ship changes, wait for 3rd parties to update their ship design tools (ED Shipyard, Coriolis), build all the variations of ships listed in the tables using those tools, try to find which specs in the tools correspond to which ones in the tables (what cargo/fuel/pips combo is used for each stat), manually update all the table values as well as the values on the individual ships' pages.
I had another comment but long forgotten it. Anyhow, in the interest of getting on with life, may I suggest that we re-open the page so that some of the proposed changes can be reintroduced in bite-sized chunks? At the very least the Playable Ships section urgently needs its intro fixed up (and I like the one that was proposed) as does the mess for Outfitting's intro.
I can tackle the edits of the Ship and Outfitting tables if folks want to pitch me some suggestions for them, such as nominating the least desirable / most redundant / least useful columns in them for consolidation/removal.
Hope that helps :)
