Ion drives have been mentioned once or twice in Elite lore. The only issue I have with that is that our current knowledge of ion drives suggests that they wouldn't be able to achieve the type of thrust seen in Elite. I personally think that the helium exhaust from the fusion reactor is used as thrust, perhaps even magnetically accelerated (as it would be in plasma form) to increase thrust further.
