so because I was curious on the thruster mechanics myself, I ended up looking up the data for how optimal mass is supposed to work.

just wanted to say the way the wiki explains it was a little bit hard to read, but I think I have something now.

I'm not currently certain if the minimum mass value prevents you from using a ship or simply penalizes you, but I'm assuming either hard cut off or a linear loss in performance down to 0 tonnes of mass. then, the minimum mass marks the minimum performance multiplier, halfway between minimum and optimal mass is the optimal performance, and right at optimal mass is maximum performance. then, it regresses down to 0% performace at the maximum mass allowed.

edit: according to some anaconda owners, it's definitely a linear regression to 0 under the minimum mass.

meanwhile, the amount of thrust force (acceleration) might be purely related on top speed given by optimal thrust performance, as well as the retro force. no confirm though.

might put a graph up later.

New findings: the Top Speed shown in game is WITH the current unladen mass and performance modifier in mind.

Take the base top speed of the ship shown in the shipyard or other game data files, then if the mass is at or below minimum, the performance modifier is at its maximum, going down to the optimal mass. At optimal mass, the performance modifier is 100%, and close to the Maximum mass, the performance modifier will be at its minimum.

It's not possible to exceed the maximum mass by configuring your ship, ergo it is a hard cut off. It is however completely possible to go under the minimum mass with no loss of performance, you just don't get any further ramp-up.

This is in part to some extensive testing I've done configuring an Adder over and over again between the mass limits of 2E, 2A, and 3B thrusters. Oh, I should probably mention that the in-game listed top speed is with UNLADEN mass.

-snip, assumed an unexpected 1.13 scalar with 3B thrusters instead of 1.16, which is supposed to be expected.-

Here's that chart I made, by the way.
