Some local citation templates use a citation module that reports missing or inconsistent fields. These messages identify a problem with the citation's data or format; they do not prove that its source is unreliable.

Find the citation

Preview the page, locate the marked reference and edit its template call. Read the template's own documentation before adding fields. The local copy's supported parameters matter; another wiki's latest template may differ.

Common corrections

  • Supply a source title and the information that identifies the cited publication.
  • Check the URL, date and any identifier for typing errors. Do not invent an author, publication date or access date.
  • Use one supported field for the same value instead of contradictory duplicate parameters.
  • For named-reference errors, check the definition and repeated uses under Help:Footnotes.

Preview after each correction. If an unfamiliar error persists, link the affected article and a small example on the citation template's talk page. Avoid changing a widely used module to suppress one page's error. Follow Project:Template documentation for testing a shared template.
