Admin note: This page is being kept as a user-space draft for a player-created Commander profile. It is not intended to be an official Frontier Developments canon article or a mainspace lore page. The accidental mainspace page Valerian Duval was deleted, and this draft will remain in user space unless wiki staff advise otherwise.
Valerian Duval is a player-created Commander associated with Elite Dangerous and documented through his biography and logbook entries. Valerian is described as an Imperial-aligned explorer and researcher born on Emerald in the Cemiess system, operating outside formal court recognition while remaining ideologically aligned with Aisling Duval.[1][2]
In his biography, Valerian is described as a first cousin by blood to Princess Aisling Duval through an unofficial Jansen-line branch of Hengist Duval's bloodline, but his name does not appear among the publicly acknowledged members of the Imperial Family.[1]
The character is explicitly not presented as a throne claimant, heir, usurper, prince, or public royal figure. His story instead centres on exile from court life, exploration as service, and support for Aisling's reformist vision of the Empire.
Biography
Early life on Emerald
Valerian Duval was born on Emerald, in the Cemiess system, under the political and social shadow of the Imperial Palace.[1] His earliest archive entry, ARCHIVE 3285 - Emerald Record, frames his birth record as private and politically inconvenient rather than publicly celebrated.[3]
The character's early life is written around the contradiction between proximity to Imperial privilege and exclusion from public dynastic recognition. His birth near the Imperial Palace gave him a view of Imperial power, but not the protection or legitimacy attached to acknowledged members of the Duval family.[3]
Aisling Duval and Imperial tradition
Valerian's childhood connection to Aisling Duval is presented in his logbooks as familial rather than romantic. In ARCHIVE 3296 - The Marble Lesson, he remembers Aisling as a young woman underestimated by Imperial nobles who mistook compassion for naivety.[4]
The entry uses Aisling's rejection of cruel tradition as a formative moment for Valerian's own political conscience. This aligns the character thematically with Aisling's established public opposition to Imperial Slavery, Stop Slavery Stupid, and Unchain, while keeping his personal story outside official canon claims.
Leaving court life
By 3301, Valerian's archive describes growing conflict with older relatives, patrons, and court expectations. In ARCHIVE 3301 - Courtly Obedience, he rejects silence, cruelty disguised as discipline, and the expectation that he should become another decorative asset of Imperial society.[5]
Rather than become useful to court politics, Valerian leaves. His exile is written as a deliberate refusal of hypocrisy rather than an attempt to gather power elsewhere.[5]
The Jansen line
Valerian's family connection is built around the Jansen line, a politically difficult branch associated in official Elite Dangerous lore with Hector Jansen, the illegitimate son of Hengist Duval and father of Hadrian Augustus Duval. In Valerian's continuity, this hidden bloodline becomes a warning rather than a banner.[6]
In ARCHIVE 3302 - The Jansen Name, Valerian studies fragments of old family records and concludes that the Imperial court would remember him if useful, deny him if dangerous, and exploit him if profitable. He therefore chooses the Pilots Federation, where status matters less than the ability to fly, trade, scan, survive, and pay a rebuy.[6]
Unchain and Aisling's reformism
In ARCHIVE 3304 - Unchain, Valerian reads news of Stop Slavery Stupid becoming Unchain while far from Emerald.[7] The entry marks a turning point in his view of Aisling. He had believed that leaving the court was enough, but Aisling's decision to stay close enough to the machinery of Imperial power to challenge it from within forces him to reconsider what service might mean.[7]
Hadrian's shadow
Valerian's archive treats the public emergence of Hadrian Augustus Duval as proof that buried bloodlines can become politically dangerous. In ARCHIVE 3305 - Hadrian's Shadow, Valerian watches the Jansen line become impossible for the Empire to ignore and deliberately refuses to become a public claim, title, or banner.[8]
The log establishes one of the character's central limits: Valerian does not seek recognition, succession, or dynastic office. When Hadrian becomes a symbol, Valerian chooses to become a blank space.[8]
Mourning on Emerald
In ARCHIVE 3306 - Mourning on Emerald, Valerian reflects on the assassination of Prince Harold Duval and Aisling's grief.[9] The entry distinguishes his rejection of the family from his loyalty to Aisling, who is described as caught inside Imperial poison without becoming it.[9]
Contact with Aisling
In ARCHIVE 3312 - The Name Became Valerian, Aisling finds Valerian through old registries, private correspondence, and Pilots Federation traces.[10] Her contact is written not as a royal command, but as a careful private approach grounded in family recognition and shared questions about what the Empire might still become.[10]
From that point, Valerian's exploration and exobiology work changes meaning. His mapped worlds, biological surveys, and distant atmospheric discoveries become possible future refuge sites, research corridors, settlement prospects, and leverage for a worthier Empire.[10]
Commander career
Valerian lists his role as Explorer / Researcher, allegiance as Empire, and power alignment as Aisling Duval.[2] His current Commander identity is centred on the Mandalay-class exploration vessel Azure Oath, with the identifier UNBND.[2]
Azure Oath
Azure Oath is Valerian's Mandalay-class exploration vessel and the central ship of his current Commander identity. It is associated with exploration, exobiology, long-distance survey work, far-rim pilgrimage records, and the search for future refuge worlds, research sites, and safe corridors beyond the Core Systems.[2][11]
The vessel's name reflects two parts of Valerian's continuity. "Azure" refers to his alignment with Aisling Duval, whose political identity and reformist movement are closely associated with blue Imperial symbolism in player interpretation and Powerplay imagery. "Oath" refers to Valerian's personal refusal to use his claimed bloodline as a demand for status. In his continuity, the ship's name marks a vow to serve through exploration, research, and practical aid rather than court recognition, inheritance, or succession politics.
The ship identifier UNBND is read in Valerian's records as "unbound", a reference to exile from court expectations and to his support for self-determination. The name therefore links the Mandalay to his larger doctrine: exploration as service, not prestige; loyalty as principle, not ambition; and an Empire made worthier rather than weaker.
As a Mandalay, Azure Oath also suits Valerian's role as an explorer and researcher. The class is associated with planetary exploration, long-range travel, and exobiological survey work, making it a practical vessel for the kind of distant reconnaissance that defines his post-court life.[12]
Distant Worlds 3
Valerian's player continuity records participation in Distant Worlds 3, a community-driven Elite Dangerous expedition.[13] The expedition website describes Distant Worlds 3 as a community-driven adventure in Elite Dangerous, while external coverage reported thousands of pilots joining the expedition.[13][14]
Within Valerian's logbook continuity, the Beagle Point pilgrimage places Azure Oath at Beagle Point in The Abyss, tying the character's far-rim exploration to the legacy of large-scale community expeditions and to his own doctrine of exploration as memory and service.[11]
Pale Moon of January
In CONTACT - Pale Moon of January, Valerian records docking aboard the megaship Pale Moon of January in the Eorgh Flyi ZB-S d5-21 system, contacting Sister Serani Mori of the Sisters of Meropis.[15] The entry frames the contact as an aligned diplomatic note rather than an official order from Aisling.
Valerian expresses support for the Sisters' principles of harmony, self-determination, human dignity, restraint, rescue, exploration, and practical service.[15]
Beagle Point pilgrimage
Valerian's PILGRIMAGE - Beagle Point entry places Azure Oath at Beagle Point in The Abyss, landed or docked with the DSSA Distant Worlds fleet carrier presence and recorded as part of an annual far-rim return connected to the legacy of Distant Worlds exploration.[11] The entry emphasises exploration as memory and service rather than simple prestige.[11]
Affiliations and aligned contacts
Valerian's public Commander record is built around the Pilots Federation, exploration, research, and Aisling-aligned Powerplay activity rather than recognised Imperial rank. His continuity treats the Pilots Federation as the institution through which he becomes publicly legible: not as a court figure, but as a pilot whose travels, vessel records, and logbook entries can be traced.
His ideological alignment is with Aisling Duval, especially her reformist and anti-slavery ideals. His support is written as loyalty to a worthier Empire rather than obedience to dynastic ambition. This distinction is important to him: Valerian's claimed bloodline explains some of his motives, but does not function as public authority.
Valerian's distant exploration continuity also connects him with large-scale community expeditions such as Distant Worlds 3 and with aligned humanitarian or exploratory contacts such as the Sisters of Meropis, recorded through the Pale Moon of January logbook entry.[13][15] These contacts support his broader doctrine of travel, survey work, rescue, restraint, and practical aid beyond formal court channels.
Relationship with Aisling Duval
Valerian's relationship with Aisling Duval is described as close family alignment and ideological loyalty. His public biography describes him as a first cousin through the Jansen line of Hengist Duval's blood, while his logbooks present Aisling as the person who reconnects him to family records without demanding courtly obedience.[1][10]
This connection is not written as succession politics. Valerian's loyalty is based on shared wounds, reformist ideals, and belief in an Empire made worthier rather than weaker.
Public record and recognition
Valerian's continuity treats his public existence as a Commander differently from his private family history. His Pilots Federation identity, exploration records, vessel names, and logbook entries can be found through player-facing sources such as Inara, while his claimed connection to the Duval bloodline remains part of player-created biography rather than official Imperial history.[1][2]
This distinction is central to the character. Valerian is not written as a publicly acknowledged member of the Imperial Family, nor as a figure with recognised dynastic standing. His name is instead preserved through private records, Commander activity, and the testimony of those who encounter him through exploration, Powerplay-aligned service, and roleplay communities.
In this sense, Valerian's reputation develops from the outside inward. He is known first as a Commander, explorer, researcher, and Aisling-aligned Imperial pilot. The family connection functions as private context for his motives, not as public authority.
Themes
Valerian's roleplay continuity is built around several recurring themes:
- exile over hypocrisy
- family records leaving traces
- tradition challenged when it teaches cruelty
- exploration as service rather than ego
- exobiology as preparation for future refuge worlds, research sites, safe corridors, and settlement possibilities
- loyalty rooted in principle rather than ambition
- dignity, restraint, mercy, and self-determination
- support for Aisling Duval's reformist and anti-slavery ideals
Exploration doctrine
Valerian's exploration doctrine frames survey work as a form of service. In his continuity, the mapping of distant systems and the cataloguing of biological life are not treated as trophies, but as preparation for future human needs: refuge worlds, research corridors, emergency routes, scientific outposts, and places where vulnerable communities might one day survive beyond the reach of old Imperial cruelty.
This doctrine separates him from courtly performance. Where Imperial politics often rewards visibility, patronage, and symbolic obedience, Valerian's work is usually distant, practical, and difficult to display. His loyalty to Aisling Duval is therefore expressed less through ceremony than through the quiet accumulation of useful knowledge.
This approach also explains why his ship, Azure Oath, carries political meaning without functioning as a war banner. The vessel is not a claim to authority. It is a working instrument: a mobile archive, survey platform, shelter, and witness.
Symbols and identity
Valerian's symbolic identity is built around restraint rather than public heraldry. The Duval name, the Jansen-line claim, the colour azure, and the ship identifier UNBND all point toward belonging without recognition: a connection to Imperial history that is present in private records, but not accepted as public status.
The colour azure links the character to Aisling Duval's reformist Imperial image in player interpretation, while the word "oath" links him to chosen service rather than inherited entitlement. UNBND, read as "unbound", reinforces his refusal to let court expectations, family silence, or dynastic utility define his work.
This symbolism also sets limits around the character. Valerian is not a royal claimant, prince, public heir, or usurper. The symbols attached to him are used to explain loyalty, exile, and service, not succession.
