Exactly, and pretty much the first thing you have to do with a new ship is to exit the station, but docking computer doesn't do that for you. Still people are suggesting these devices to pilots who "have problems fitting through the entrance" even though it only helps with half of the times, so I'd rather say these are for pilots too lazy to dock manually.
And I'm one of those lazy with hugeass ships like this, it's much more comfortable to leave the docking computer to do the job and do something else meanwhile, as it takes ages to even reach the mailslot with T9's top speed.
