shields are purely based on the ships size.
think of it like a tarp or wrapping paper, if you have twice the ammount of wrapping paper cut and on it then that present is gonna be a hassle to open regardless of how much it weighs. however if you have half of what you need to wrap your gift then its already open, so why did you even wrap it? the mass of your ship changed but the size does not. yes even when the anaconda gets plates ripped off for having a shite pilot it still doesnt change.
at the engineers if you raise the optimal mass for the generator then your basicly increasing the ammount of wrapping paper on the gift your sending. so send the pirates one of them ducktape chained and wrapped gifts.
