You get more money and priveledge. You get more challenging missions. You get access to special places.
There's lots of ED YouTube videos right now with titles like "make 20 million in an hour". They're all based on the idea of taking lots of missions. This isn't a game exploit, it's just because the guys doing the video are already Elite and don't realise that you don't get offered millions for missions if you aren't that highly ranked. When you just start out, you'd be lucky to get a few hundred credits per mission, and you never get offered the interesting ones.
The Corvette seems everyone's long term aim at the moment, and while you don't technically have to be Elite in anything to buy one... yeah, well, you're unlikely ever to get the money or the federal rank otherwise.
