Trading will always be most profitable but you can't do that all the time your mind will go crazy, good thing you can do different elements in the game and that's what makes the game great. I am a bounty hunter and I do join almost every community goal there is, kill pirates in signal sources and nav beacons or just interdict wanted npc's and players. When I don't feel like killing I can do trading and earn some cash between 2 systems in a jump range of 1 or 2, depending of the trade route I found and my current jump range on my ship. Or a little bit less profitable but still enjoyable and something different are exploring and mining.
I first started playing this game and thought I will ignore everything and just do bounty hunting but just like for example most first person shooters you get tired after hours and hours of killing and feel like a change, you close the game and play something different. So eventually I started trying the other elements in the game and have to say I find it great that I can chill and relax and do some mining, explore the galaxy a bit or in your case go trading :) Besides there are a lot of dedicated players in this game that like to mine even tho they propably know they won't get much profit compaired to bounty hunting or trading.
So there is for everyone something to do.
ps. You say you made 4000cr in 30 min? That's way less then I am making, there are some pretty good mining guides on youtube, have a look and see what your doing wrong.
