No. The prospector drone detaches itself if you travel too far away (see "Active Range" specs) or if you have more drones out than your controller allows (see "Max Active Limpets" specs).
If you deplete the asteroid while the drone is attached it will remain attached and display "Asteroid depleted" or something to this effect when you target it.
