"think of it in terms of volume of air." - don't try to make sense of it. But if you do, think a step further. How does the volume of air in the cockpit/ship come into consideration, when your canopy is broken? At that point, you only have your suit and a possible connection of that to the ships module and it's reserves, which would mean, that you'd have a one-size-fits-all system, where the emergency reserve only depends on the grade, not the class.
