You can also set up fire groups. That means that you might have one set for your thermal (lasers) weapons to take down shields and one set for kinetic (cannon) weapons to destroy the hull. More common is to have a set for each role such as exploring (Discovery Scanner / Detailed Surface Scanner), bounty-hunting / piracy (Kill Warrant Scanner / Cargo Scanner) and combat (weapons), etc. This is more important when looking at mining, where you might have a set of combat weapons and mining lasers, each on its own group.
