As was pointed out, additional mass added to the ship doesn't interfere with shields, only the ships base hull mass is taken into consideration. The devs really need to clarify this in the ui, as many people assume additional mass is a factor. It does however affect manoeuvrability, speed, and jump range, although the difference is not so great that it affects ship builds. Only folks looking to min max jump range for exploration are likely to pay any attention.
