Personally - Take all missions for anyone allied with the main faction (I only do trade), trade between the mission systems no matter how small the profit, have a second place to get missions or a good trade route if feasable, move as soon as friendly. Repeat. Worked for me. Once I got to 284T and when I wanted progression I would carry 10T of the things I was most asked for all the time, you would be amazed how many times I popped missions as soon as I arrived at a station. Had a small hang at Baron but that was my fault doing all sorts of random stuff for money getting out of a clipper into a python.
