They're also great because you can sit and wait until your shields recharge after a fight, and nobody will attack you as long as you aren't carrying cargo. Unlike haz res, the playfield will fill up with juicy targets while you wait.
Watch out if you've pledged to a powerplay and are in a hostile power though - powerplay NPCs are common. This is especially true if you log out while in a comp nav beacon and log in later - the first five or six ships will be powerplay bots, and you might quickly get overwhelmed.
