From Elite Dangerous Wiki

Given its origins, much of that size might be engines. The original versions were noted to be custom-built and not even include cargo space, so maybe class-4 engines on a 50T ship then (as many pilots still do) removing the shields and downgrading (or just part-filling) the fuel-tank.

The 32nd-century version (original Elite) had one laser, no hyperspace (so no FSD) and was half the size of a cobra in at least two dimensions. Oddly, Alioth.net suggests that it had 10T of cargo space, but that might just be room left over from ripping out anything not essential to life-support or propulsion.
