there should be an option for insurance broker while in spacedock, that would allow you to see how much your insurance cost currently would be incase something unfortunate happens, that way you can calculate a minimum float to keep in the bank, there have been numerous times ive died only to have to start in a sidewinder because i was short by £100.
the insurance broker should also be able to sell a "premium rate" insurance that allows you to not have to rely on it being in your bank at the time of death, essentially pre purchasing an extra life. the catch would be you have to pre pay the premium again after you upgrade your ship, oh and as in real insurance, you dont get your money back when you prebuy a new premium
