The heyday of the Clipper was maybe two years long. It was then nerfed pretty badly. Probably as to not overlap the Cutter. After its nerfing it became the smuggler's choice ship, but then the Krait came out and so now the Clipper is all but useless. Whether you want to smuggle, explore, or mine? The Krait MKII is better....making the Clipper a mere hurdle to get to the Cutter. Of course, if you prefer it'd aesthetics there's that too. It has uses as smuggler/ passenger runner however, but the Krait is probably still the easier choice to access.
