I've been experimenting with 4x small cannons on my bounty hunting Asp. I usually save them for the larger ships while using my 2x class 2 pulse lasers for the smaller pirates. The cannons are great once the big ship's shields are down and when their gimballed they automatically compensate for target lead and projectile velocity. The major disadvantage is the low rate of fire and low velocity, hence why I save the quad cannons for the larger ships (I'd say Asps and larger).
